While details of the contract signed by Slavia’s general manager Vladimír Růžička and the Rangers’ Glen Sather have not been released, it is believed to establish training and marketing links between the two organizations.TENNIS Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych celebrated his fourth career tournament triumph on the ATP circuit after beating Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro, 6-1, 6-4, in the final of the Japan Open in Tokyo Oct. 5. En route to the triumph, Berdych defeated the event’s second seed Andy Roddick of the United States and also No. 3 seed Fernando Gonzales of Chile.SOCCER Slavia Praha remained the only Czech soccer team in the UEFA Cup’s draw after the tournament’s opening round. Having tied with Romania’s Vaslui 0-0 in Prague two weeks before, Slavia held Vaslui to a 1-1 tie in the return leg in Romania Oct. 2, thus qualifying on the away goal rule. The same rule halted Sparta Praha’s progress in the Cup. After a 0-0 draw in Croatia against Dinamo Zagreb, Sparta drew with Dinamo 3-3 in Prague. Meanwhile, Baník Ostrava was unable to clear its 1-0 deficit from the game against Spartak Moscow in Ostrava and it tied with Spartak 1-1 in Russia Oct. 2.AFFAIR Poland could be handed automatic 3-0 defeats in upcoming world qualifiers against Czech Republic (Oct. 11) and Slovakia (Oct. 15) if it does not reinstate the country’s soccer association, governing bodies FIFA and UEFA announced Oct. 1. Poland’s Olympic Committee’s arbitration board suspended the management of the Polish Soccer Association for failing to address corruption issues. Further action is to be considered when the FIFA executive committee meets in Zurich on Oct. 23–24, with UEFA’s emergency panel due to meet around the same time.RETURN Soccer midfielder Marek Heinz, the Gambrinus liga’s best scorer in 2004, returned to the top-flight Czech league after four years. Heinz transferred from French first division’s FC Nantes to FC Brno. The Moravian club paid 200,000 euros ($278,000/4.95 million Kč) for the 31-year-old player who has made 30 appearances for the Czech national team.CHAMPIONSHIPS The Czech Republic and Austria were named co-hosts for the Men’s European Volleyball Championships in 2011. The announcement came Sept. 27 from the European Volleyball Confederation. The tournament will take place in Prague and Liberec and also in the Austrian cities of Vienna and Innsbruck.AWARD Czech javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková was named the second best female athlete in Europe this year in a poll by the European Athletic Association. Špotáková won a gold medal at the recent Beijing Olympics and also set the world record. Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbaeva finished first after simlarly winning an Olympic gold and besting the world record three times in the process.
